Gian Menico Cetti
Gian Menico Cetti ; also: Gian Domenico Cetti (* May 14, 1780 in Lugano ; † February 23, 1817 ibid) was a Swiss translator .
Life
At a young age he had reached the rank of colonel , but gave up the military career and studied medicine, especially surgery , at the University of Bologna . Due to the influence of the later cardinal, Giuseppe Gaspare Mezzofanti , who taught oriental languages at the University of Bologna, he began to study languages after completing his medical degree, so that in addition to Latin and the modern western languages, he also learned Greek , Hebrew , Arabic and Russian dominated. He was the first translator to translate Russian texts into an occidental language and these translations earned him the recognition of Tsar Alexander I and Pope Pius VII .
His most outstanding work, however, in 1805 was the translation of the text History of the Battle and Fall of Switzerland. Mountain cantons by Heinrich Zschokke in Italian, which he provided with notes and an appendix on the state of the old and new Swiss Confederation .
During the Helvetic Republic he was secretary of the prefecture of Lugano.
