Products

Giant manufactures bikes in a wide variety of designs. In addition to trekking and touring bikes, the company has been producing racing bikes and various types of mountain bikes ( full suspension, etc.) since it was founded . The company's steel frames have long been made of Tange tubing .

Giant as original equipment manufacturer for other brands

Initially, the company was an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for well-known US brands. Just five years after it was founded, Giant was able to convince the traditional American brand Schwinn Bicycle Company in 1977 to have its bikes manufactured by Giant. Soon Giant was also manufacturing for Scott , Trek and Colnago . In 1987 Schwinn switched to a cheaper Chinese manufacturer and Giant continued to develop its own brand. These included the Defy and Propel racing bike models , which were later used successfully in the Tour de France .

Carbon fiber bicycle frame

Giant is one of the pioneers in the manufacture of bicycle frames from carbon fibers ("carbon"). Giant first installed carbon fiber on bicycle frames in 1984 and launched a bicycle frame made entirely of carbon fiber in 1996. According to its own information, Giant was the first designer to automatically round high-strength carbon fiber mats, later to wind them into oval tailpipes and glue them together, which led to an inexpensive base pipe that could be sawn to fit and glued into aluminum sleeves. This made it possible to use conventional plug-in processes in conjunction with the classic diamond frame shape and to dispense with the otherwise common manual bonding technique used in carbon fiber construction. All Giant frames are completely in-house; As with some other brands, there are no suppliers.

As with the French component manufacturer LOOK, the first complete frames from Giant consisted of a carbon tube system with dural sleeves and an aluminum fork (for example the Giant Cadex model series ). It was not until the mid-1990s that suitable full carbon forks could also be manufactured through the use of viscoplastic adhesive materials and resins.

Cycling

Giant was and is the official supplier of several cycling teams , u. a. from Once , the T-Mobile team , as well as from the Columbia team and the Rabobank team . At the beginning of the 2013 season, Giant became the main sponsor of Team Giant-Shimano (later, among others, as Team Giant-Alpecin and Team Sunweb ), and remained its supplier until the end of the 2018 season, before Giant became supplier to the CCC team for the 2019 season .
