Gideon Sa'ar ( גדעון סער; * December 9, 1966 as Gideon Moses Serchanski in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli politician of the national conservative Likud party. He was a member of the Knesset from 2003 until his temporary retirement in 2014 . From 2009 to 2013 he served as education minister and from 2013 to 2014 as interior minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu . In September 2014 he announced his retirement from politics on the grounds that he wanted to have more time for his family. Party friends suspected political motives, however. He has been a member of the Knesset again since April 2019. In November 2019, in the wake of unsuccessful efforts to form a government and following the indictment against Netanyahu, Sa'ar said that if he steered towards a third ballot, he would call for a Likud party primer, in which he would run for party leader. Saar lost the vote for the party chairmanship with 71.5% to 28.5% of the votes cast.

Life

Sa'ar was born in Tel Aviv and studied law at Tel Aviv University, where he earned a bachelor's degree.

In May 2013, Sa'ar married the news presenter Geula Even , who presented the main news on Israeli television for many years. Sa'ar has four children, Daniella and Alona from his first marriage and David and Shira from his marriage to Even, as well as a grandson named Nimrod.

Political positions

Sa'ar is considered liberal-conservative, his role model is the Israeli state founder David Ben-Gurion .

Sa'ar is against a Palestinian state. He opposed Ariel Sharon’s 2005 disengagement plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip . While Netanyahu spoke out in favor of a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict in a 2009 speech , Sa'ar stated that this was never part of the Likud program. In April 2018, Sa'ar declared that the two-state solution was no longer relevant to peace in the Middle East. It was "downright madness" to establish a Palestinian state alongside Israel, which was a failed state in the making. Israel must remain in Jewish hands from “the river to the sea”.

In November 2019, he warned of the intention of Blau-Weiß to form a minority government with the support of the Arab parties . "A minority government formed by relying on opponents of Zionism will not be able to meet Israel's national security challenges."
