Giele botter

The Giele Botter is a former open-cast mining area in Luxembourg , which was only created in the 1960s, and in which iron ore, the so-called Minette , was mined until 1977 . It is now ideal for long and interesting walks. A variety of biotopes and stages of development can be admired here according to the season.

General

Protection status

The Giele Botter has been under protection since November 20, 1991 as part of the Prenzebierg nature reserve .

Directions

The car park, about 1 km from Fond-de-Gras on the road to Niederkorn / Differdange, is a good starting point for a walk . From here it is about 1 km to the north along the forest path. You can hike through the nature reserve to Pétange . It's about 5 to 6 km to the train station. In the opposite direction, you can turn into the forest from the car park at the train station in Pétange, along the cemetery.

In the summer months you can also combine the walk on weekends with a steam train ride on the Train 1900, which runs between Fond-de-Gras and Pétange train station.

Fond-de-Gras

Fond-de-Gras is a disused iron ore reloading station and is now part of the cultural inventory of Luxembourg. The former railway tracks and railway constructions are today by the museum railways used "1900 Train" and "Minièresbunn". There is also a former generator hall from Hollerich , an old rolling mill and a historic grocer .

Nature reserve

After the closure, the area was partly left to its own devices, partly used as a debris dump for industrial waste. But the fact that the interventions created a very special and diverse vegetation called nature lovers and environmentalists to the scene. In 1991 the area was designated as a réserve naturelle Prënzebierg .

Orchids

There are 19 species of orchids:

  1. Fly Ragwort ( Ophrys insectifera )
  2. Bee ragwort ( Ophrys apifera ): very common here (up to 300 specimens)
  3. Nestwurz ( Neottia nidus-avis )
  4. White forest bird ( Cephalanthera damasonium )
  5. Red forest bird ( Cephalanthera rubra ): quite rare here
  6. Large two-leaf ( Listera ovata )
  7. Broad-leaved stendola ( Epipactis helleborine )
  8. Müller's Stendelwurz ( Epipactis muelleri )
  9. Brown-red stendellum ( Epipactis atrorubens ): particularly common here
  10. Pyramidal dogwort ( Anacamptis pyramidalis ): numerous here (more than 1000 specimens)
  11. Two-leaved forest hyacinth ( Platanthera bifolia )
  12. Greenish forest hyacinth ( Platanthera chlorantha )
  13. Mosquito Haendelwurz ( Gymnadenia conopsea )
  14. Broad-leaved orchid ( Dactylorhiza majalis )
  15. Fuchs's orchid ( Dactylorhiza fuchsii )
  16. Male orchid ( Orchis mascula )
  17. Helmet orchid ( Orchis militaris )
  18. Purple orchid ( Orchis purpurea )
  19. Overlooked orchid ( Dactylorhiza praetermissa )
