Gigathlon

The Gigathlon is an endurance sporting event lasting several days, which has been held in Switzerland since 1998 and in the Czech Republic since 2016 .

In the Gigathlon, which consists of five disciplines, daily distances of an average of 4 km swimming, 100 km racing bike, 50 km mountain bike, 25 km inline skating and 20 km running must be covered over several days. There are single starters ( single man and single woman ), couples ( couple ) or teams of five ( team of five ) at the start. The first Gigathlon was held in Switzerland in 1998 . The duration varies between two and seven days.

Invents.ch AG in Zurich owns the license rights and was the organizer of the Gigathlon Switzerland in 1998 and 2000 and has been again since 2015. From 2002 to 2013 the event was organized by the Swiss Olympic Association " Swiss Olympic " and was called " Swiss Olympic Gigathlon ».

Since 2016 organized by the SRO Eventime the Gigathlon Czech Republic , north of Prague in the Czech Republic . A gigathlon in Cozumel , Mexico was planned for November 2018 .

  • 2011 «on the rocks» 2 days in the central town of Turtmann
  • 2012 “closer to you” 2 days in central Olten
  • 2013 “From East to West” 6 days, Chur, Lake Zurich, Central Switzerland, Bern, Jura, Lake Geneva, Lausanne
  • 2014 was planned in the border triangle of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, but did not take place
  • 2015 “Discover History”, 3 days, Aargau
  • 2016 «just massive» 2 days, Ticino and Uri, central location Erstfeld
  • 2017 “The Reformotion” 2 days, Zurich
  • 2018 "Unleash the Animal!" 3 days, Arosa and Davos
  • 2019 «Key Moments» 3 days, Obwalden and Nidwalden

In 2000 the starters were given the option of taking part in the race with or without the swimming distance due to the weather conditions and therefore there were two winners this year.

In 2002, the year of the Swiss national exhibition Expo.02 , the first seven-day Gigathlon took place.

In 2005, the Gigathlon Switzerland started in Tenero on "alpine saturday" and on "jurassic sunday" from Ticino across Switzerland to Basel . The stage was Lucerne .

In 2007, the Gigathlon extended for the second time over a week after the 2002 Expo.

The 2011 Gigathlon took the 5,300 starters over 340 kilometers and 11,000 meters of altitude over the Gornergrat (3,089 m above sea level) through the Valais . The winners were Nina Brenn and Samuel Hürzeler . The Zurich woman triumphed for the fourth time in a row and this was the first victory for Hürzeler.

In 2012 the race was 12 km swimming, 198 km road cycling, 106 km mountain biking, 92 km inline skating and 52 km running.

From June 28th to 30th, 2019, the Gigathlon took place in Obwalden and Nidwalden with the central location Sarnen . There were a total of around 2100 participants in the categories Single Man / Woman (single starter), Couple (couple) and Team of Five (team of 5). The following disciplines had to be mastered: SwimRun (combination of swimming and running), swimming, cycling , biking , trail running and inline or running.
