The Gigg Lane (through sponsorship agreement officially Planet U Energy Stadium ) is a football stadium in the English town of Bury , Greater Manchester . In the 1940s the facility, with standing room, had a capacity of 40,000 spectators, while the current seating capacity is 11,800.
history
The football club FC Bury had Gigg Lane built in 1885 and has been the club's home ground ever since. The first football game at Gigg Lane took place on September 12, 1885 between Bury FC and Wigan Athletic , which the home side won 4-3. The venue has had floodlights since 1953 , although the first floodlit match took place in 1889, when the football league had not yet approved floodlights.
In November 2013, the sporting goods retailer JD Sports Fashion, founded in Bury, acquired the rights to the name of Gigg Lane. For three years it was called JD Stadium . In August 2017, Gigg Lane was renamed The Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane , after the utility company Energy Checking Company Limited .
In April 2017, Bury FC announced the construction of a new stadium with 15,000 to 20,000 seats within three years.
In February 2019, Gigg Lane got a new name. The in Leeds -based supplier of renewable energy called Planet-U Energy has been title sponsor for five years. The contract also includes the complete supply of the stadium with renewable energies.
Other events
The stadium is also used for numerous other sports such as rugby , cricket , baseball and wrestling . It is also used by other football clubs. For example, the reserve team of Manchester United plays in this stadium, the FC United of Manchester used the sports facility from 2005 to 2014.
Visitor records and average attendance
The attendance record at Gigg Lane was set up on January 9, 1960 when the third round game in the 1959/60 FA Cup between Bury FC and Bolton Wanderers attracted 35,000 visitors. In modern times of the seating stadiums, the highest number of visitors is 9,115. It was set up at a game between Bury FC and Burnley FC on December 26, 1999. The negative record is 461 spectators at the Freight Rover Trophy game between Bury and the Tranmere Rovers on February 26, 1986.
