Gilbert Espinosa Chavez

Gilbert Espinosa Chávez (born May 9, 1932 in Ontario , † March 15, 2020 in San Diego ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in San Diego .

Life

Gilbert Espinosa Chávez, son of Mexican immigrants, was ordained a priest for the diocese of San Diego on March 19, 1960 . He was a parish priest in San Bernardino and a teacher of Latin, Spanish and algebra in Catholic schools. In addition, Chavez worked for four years as a chaplain in prisons, where he worked particularly with drug addicts. He was particularly popular with the Latinos .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on April 9, 1974 auxiliary bishop in San Diego and titular bishop of Magarmel . He received his episcopal ordination on June 21 of the same year by the Bishop of San Diego, Leo Thomas Maher ; Co- consecrators were John Raphael Quinn , Bishop of Oklahoma City-Tulsa , and Patrick Fernández Flores , Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio . He was the second clergyman of Latin American descent to rise to the rank of bishop in the United States. He made particular merits in promoting Spanish-speaking pastoral care and encouraging devout Latinos to become involved in the Church.

On June 1, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

Even in retirement he remained active until shortly before his death and took part in all major events of the diocese. In 2017, for example, he was present at the consecration of Auxiliary Bishop John Dolan , whom he had confirmed as an eighth grader .
