Leo Thomas Maher
Leo Thomas Maher (born July 1, 1915 in Mount Union , Iowa , USA; † February 23, 1991 in San Diego , California , USA) was Roman Catholic Bishop of San Diego .
Life
Leo Thomas Maher was ordained a priest on December 18, 1943 .
On January 27, 1962, Pope John XXIII appointed him . first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Santa Rosa in California . The Apostolic Envoy of the United States , Egidio Vagnozzi , ordained him bishop on April 5 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Hugh Aloysius Donohoe , Bishop of Stockton , and Merlin Joseph Guilfoyle , Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco .
Paul VI appointed him on August 22, 1969 . to the Bishop of San Diego . Maher carried out the post until his age-related resignation on July 10, 1990; as early as 1989 he had been assigned Robert Henry Brom as coadjutor bishop .
In 1990 Maher was operated on twice for a brain tumor. He died on the morning of February 23, 1991 at his home in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, San Diego.
Act
Maher is recognized primarily for his efforts to promote dialogue between Catholics and Jews and for his commitment to African-Americans , Latinos , Vietnamese, and Filipino-Americans . John Raphael Quinn , who was auxiliary bishop for three years prior to his tenure as Archbishop of San Francisco , described him as "an energetic, determined, dynamic man with a lot of personal charm." San Diego Mayor Maureen O'Connor praised him his "unlimited compassion for the poor, homeless and sick" and his "successful leadership of the Catholic community in San Diego."
During Maher's time as bishop, the number of Catholics in the diocese increased from approximately 300,000 to more than 450,000, which is why he founded 19 new parishes.
In 1989, Maher caused a stir when he banned Democratic politician Lucy Killea, a candidate for the California Senate, from Communion for her stance on abortion rights .
Maher served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of San Diego for 20 years .
