Gilles Jobin (* 1964 in Morges ) is a Swiss ballet dancer and choreographer of contemporary ballet .

biography

Gilles Jobin's parents' house was in Saignelégier in the French-speaking Swiss Jura . His father Arthur Jobin is an abstract painter .

Gilles Jobin trained in classical dance relatively late: first at the École supérieure de danse de Cannes Rosella Hightower and then at the Ballet Junior de Genève , which was then directed by Béatriz Consuelo. He then danced in the Lausanne ballet companies of Fabienne Berger and Philippe Saire and with the Catalan choreographer Àngels Margarit .

1990-1999

In 1993 he was appointed Deputy Director of the Geneva Théâtre de l'Usine . There he met the dancer and choreographer Maria Ribot . She became his partner. In 1995 the couple moved to Madrid . There Jobin created his first own choreographies: Three solos with the titles Bloody Mary (1995), Middle Suisse and Only You (1996). In 1997 Jobin and Ribot moved to London , fascinated by English performance art and the vitality of the Institute of Contemporary Arts program . He received a grant from the Artsadmin Foundation and became resident choreographer at the Théâtre Arsenic in Lausanne . There he founded his company Parano Productions and developed his first group choreography, the trio A + B = X . It premiered in 1997 at the Théâtre Arsenic , and in 1999 he performed with it at the Montpellier Danse Festival . The Dictionnaire de la danse described him as a “pioneer of a new generation of independent Swiss choreographers” because of his radical creative practice.

In 1998 he performed his Duo Macrocosm at the Palace Theater in London . In the same year Blinded by Love was created with the English performance artist Franko B and in 1999 the quintet Braindance , which was performed at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris. Tours in Europe and Brazil followed.

2000-2009

The great quintet The Moebius Strip from 2001 has constant movement as its central theme; it concentrates radically on the horizontal. The piece is also a homage to his father, whose compositions combine geometric rigor with shimmering color contrasts. With this, Jobin turned away from the themes of his earlier works, which dealt with sexuality, nudity and, subliminally, violence and war. In 2002 he created the septet Under Construction . The choreography Two-Thousand-and-Three , which he developed in 2003 for the 22 dancers of the company of the Grand Théâtre de Genève , concluded the trilogy of “organically organized movement” (sic), which was particularly well received by critics. “What amazes - and delights - about Gilles Jobin is his ability to put himself in danger by deepening the central theme of the dance with each new production: the body of the performer. His personal style (...) avoids the pitfalls of the narrative by focusing on abstraction. "

In 2004 he created the piece Delicado for the Lisbon Ballet Gulbenkian . In the same year he moved to Geneva with his family; there the sextet Steak House was established in 2005 . The following year he became an associate artist at the Bonlieu Theater in Annecy . There he produced Double Deux in 2006, Text to Speech in 2008 . With this piece he incorporated the subject of modern technology into his work. Black Swan followed in 2009

2010–

In 2010 Gilles Jobin created Le Chaînon Manquant - The Missing Link - in collaboration with the dancers from the Center de danse Donko Seko from Bamako in Mali . With the work Spider Galaxies in 2011, he deepened his work in the field of movement without any narrative structure.

In 2012 he received the Collide @ Cern award and became a resident choreographer at CERN . He concluded his time at CERN in 2012 with a public lecture on dance and physics. With the piece QUANTUM , which was performed in 2013 at the CMS , he remained connected to CERN. This piece was created in collaboration with the German video artist Julius von Bismarck , winner of the Prix Ars Electronica , the American composer Carla Scaletti and the Belgian fashion designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard . For their work on QUANTUM , Jobin and von Bismarck received support from the Fondation d' entreprise Hermès , and the piece was included in the foundation's program.

In 2015 Gilles Jobin created FORÇA FORTE with the star dancer of his ensemble, Susana Panadés Diaz. This duo again leaned on the laws of quantum physics. For FORÇA FORTE, the choreographer first captured movements at Artanim, a Geneva research center that carries out projects in the fields of orthopedics, sports medicine, 3D animation, VR and augmented reality. In the same year, Jobin shot the 3D film WOMB, which was presented in autumn 2016 on the occasion of the 22nd edition of the GIFF - Geneva International Film Festival. In 2017, Gilles Jobin collaborated with Artanim to create the first immersive VR show about contemporary ballet. With the help of VR glasses and an on-board computer, five viewers immerse themselves in a virtual area where they can move freely and exchange ideas. VR_I received the Grand Prix of Innovation for the most innovative work in the field of new platforms at the 46th Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal, where the work was presented as a world premiere in October 2017. VR_I was also awarded the audience award from FNC EXPLORE Performances / Installations for its best VR performance.

Original French quotes

  1. «chef de file d'une nouvelle génération de chorégraphes suisses indépendants»
  2. «mouvement organiquement organisé»
  3. ^ "Ce qui frappe - et ravit - chez Gilles Jobin, c'est sa capacité à se mettre en danger en approfondissant un peu plus la matière première de la danse, le corps de l'interprète, à chaque nouvelle production. Son sens de l'écriture (…) évite the pièges de la narration pour remettre l'abstraction en ligne de mire. »
