Giordano Bruno Reffi ( 1921 - May 11, 1998 ) was a San Marinese politician and lawyer. He was Capitano Reggente (Head of State) of San Marino in 1974 and 1977/78 and held several cabinet positions.

Life

Giordano Bruni Reffi was a member of the Partito Socialista Sammarinese (PSS). In 1959, in the first parliamentary election after the clashes of Rovereta , he was elected on the list of the PSS in the San Marinese parliament, the Consiglio Grande e Generale . He was elected a total of six times for the PSS in parliament, of which he was a member until 1988.

The PSS was in the opposition from 1957 to 1973. It was not until 1973 in a coalition with Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese (PDCS) and Movimento Libertà Statuarie (MLS) that the PSS was again represented in the government. Reffi was Minister of Health in the 16th Cabinet from 1973 to 1974 (Deputato per la Previdenza, la Sicurezza Sociale, l'Igiene e la Sanità) . After the 1974 election, there was a joint government of PDCS and PSS, Reffi was Minister of Education from 1974 to 1976 (Deputato per la Pubblica Istruzione e la Cultura) . After a government crisis, a government of PDCS and PSS was formed again in 1978, to which Reffi no longer belonged. After the parliamentary elections in 1978, a left-wing government was formed from the Partito Comunista Sammarinese (PCS), Partito Socialista Unitario (PSU) and PSS. Reffi became Foreign Minister (Segretario di Stato per gli Affari Esteri e Politici) . The coalition continued after the 1983 election and Reffi remained Foreign Minister. In 1986 the PCS left the government and then formed a new government with the PDCS.

Reffi was twice elected Capitano Reggente , head of state of San Marino. From April 1st to October 1st 1974 together with Ferruccio Piva and again from October 1st 1977 to April 1st 1978 together with Tito Masi .

From 1992 to 1996 Reffi was a member of the European Commission for Human Rights . From 1996 until his death he headed the committee of the initiative for a constitutional reform (Comitato di Iniziativa per la Riforma Costituzionale) .

Reffi was married to the artist and politician Marina Busignani , who in 1974 was one of the first four San Marinese women to be elected to parliament after gaining the right to stand for election.

Awards

Reffi was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic on December 19, 1980 .
