Giorgio Giacomelli

Giorgio Giacomelli (born January 25, 1930 in Milan , † February 8, 2017 in Rome ) was an Italian diplomat .

Life

Giorgio Giacomelli holds a Masters Degree in Law from the University of Padua . He studied at the University of Cambridge and the University Institute for International Studies and Development , entered the foreign service in 1956 and worked in Madrid, Paris, and Leopoldville . From January 1964 to October 1966 he was in New Delhi d'affaires .

In 1972 he headed the development cooperation department in the Foreign Ministry . From 1973 to 1976 he was ambassador to Mogadishu , Somalia and from 1976 to 1980 he was ambassador to Damascus .

From 1981 to October 1985 he was head of the development cooperation department in the Foreign Ministry. From October 1985 to February 1991 he was Commissioner for the United Nations Relief Organization for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East . From February 1991 to September 1997 he was Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime . From 1992 to September 1997 he headed the United Nations Office in Vienna .

From December 1999 to March 2001 he was Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Territories of Palestine for the UN Human Rights Commission . Since July 2002, Giacomelli has been chairman of the non-profit organization HYDROAID , for advanced training in the field of water infrastructure and services, which is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the municipal administration of Piedmont , banks and local institutions. In February 2006 Giacomelli was appointed by Kofi Annan to the UN Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB Advisory Committee for Drinking Water and Sanitary Technology ).
