Giovanni Muzi

Giovanni Alessandro Muzi (born January 1, 1772 in Rome , † November 30, 1849 in Spoleto ) was an Italian Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Città di Castello .

Life

He came from a humble background and was the son of a coachman . He was ordained priest on December 20, 1794 by the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina , Andrea Corsini . From the Collegio Romano he received his doctorate theologiae on September 13, 1795 . Then he was lecturer in philosophy and theology, first at the seminary of Magliano Sabina , then at the Arciginnasio , the University of La Sapienza . In December 1815 he joined the Curia as a consultor to the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs . From 1818 to 1823 he was Uditore of the Nuncio in Vienna Paolo Leardi .

Back in Rome, Giovanni Muzi was appointed titular archbishop of Philippi on May 16, 1823 . He was ordained bishop on May 25th of the same year by the Bishop of Ancona e Numana , Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Falzacappa ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Carlo Zen and Bishop Gregorio Muccioli . On June 28, 1823 he was sent to Chile as an Apostolic Visitator , accompanied by the young canon Giovanni Mastai Ferretti , who later became Pius IX. Should become Pope, and the priest Giuseppe Sallusti. Upon his return, Giovanni Muzi was transferred to the bishopric of Città di Castello.

He died in Spoleto in 1849 after an episcopate lasting 24 years.
