Paolo Leardi

Paolo Leardi (* 1762 in Casale Monferrato ; † December 31, 1823 in Vienna ) was a Piedmontese clergyman and papal diplomat .

Life

He was ordained a priest on July 18, 1784 and received his doctorate from the University of Bologna as Doctor iuris utriusque . He then became the secret chamberlain of Pope Pius VI. Paolo Leardi held the funeral oration on Louis XVI on September 28, 1793 in the Quirinal Palace . in the presence of the Pope, Cardinal François-Joachim de Pierre de Bernis and the aunts of the executed King of France ( les Mesdames ). On November 9th, 1800 he entered the service of the Curia as the papal house prelate . On October 30 of the same year he became ponens of the Sacra Consulta and shortly thereafter its dean, and he was also a judge at the courts of the Apostolic Signature . On September 1, 1815, he became Assessor of the Congregation for the Military.

Pope Pius VII appointed him titular Archbishop of Ephesus on September 23, 1816 . He was ordained bishop on January 12, 1817 by Cardinal Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca ; Co- consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Fabrizio Sceberras Testaferrata and Giovanni Francesco Compagnoni Marefoschi . Paolo Leardi became apostolic nuncio at the imperial court in Vienna on March 20, 1816 , his letter of accreditation is dated March 7, 1817. In March 1819 he returned to Rome again to prepare for the visit of the Austrian Emperor Franz I , who in April Took place in 1819.
