Giovanni Francesco Compagnoni Marefoschi (also Gianfrancesco Compagnoni Marefoschi ; born September 22, 1757 in Macerata , † September 17, 1820 in Rio de Janeiro ) was an Italian curia bishop .

Life

He was a son of Count Camillo Compagnoni Marefoschi and his wife Margarita Carleni. His relatives included the cardinals Prospero Marefoschi (1653–1732) and Mario Marefoschi Compagnoni (1714–1780). Giovanni Francesco Compagnoni Marefoschi graduated from the University of Macerata , where he was on 23 November 1778 as Doctor iuris utriusque and the Doctor of theology doctorate . After receiving the minor orders , he went to Rome, where he completed his studies at the Collegio Clementino . On December 20, 1781, he entered the service of the Curia . He became papal house prelate and apostolic protonotary . Pope Pius VI appointed him consultor to the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics . After the restoration of the Papal States Giovanni Francesco Compagnoni Marefoschi was appointed interim governor of Loreto on January 2, 1800 from this post he stepped back on July 21 of that year. On February 23, 1801, Compagnoni Marefoschi was appointed cleric of the Apostolic Chamber and, in 1807, Prelate of the Congregation of Loreto, and on January 11, 1808, he became President of the Archives of the Apostolic Chamber.

During the Napoleonic occupation of Rome, Gianfrancesco Compagnoni Marefoschi found refuge with his family. He hosted Pope Pius VII on his return to Rome on the night of 16-17 May 1814 in the Palazzo Marefoschi in Macerata. On September 23, he was confirmed as President of the Archives of the Apostolic Chamber.

Pope Pius VII appointed him titular bishop of Tamiathis (Damiette) on April 29, 1816 . Then Giovanni Francesco Compagnoni Marefoschi was on June 4, 1816 ordained deacon , on 9 June of the same year he received the priesthood . He received his episcopal ordination on June 23, 1816, Cesare Cardinal Brancadoro , Archbishop of Fermo ; Co- consecrators were the Bishops Gabriel Cortois de Pressigny , former Bishop of Saint-Malo , and Vincenzo Paccaroni OSB . On December 20, 1816, the Pope appointed him Nuncio to the King of Portugal, based in Brazil . So he traveled on March 3, 1817 from Rome to Rio de Janeiro, which he reached on October 27, 1817, to hand over his letters of accreditation on November 1 of the same year .

He died three years later in Brazil and was buried in the Benedictine monastery in Rio de Janeiro.
