Hans-Jürg Meier

Hans-Jürg Meier (born December 22, 1964 - December 1, 2015 ) was a Swiss composer , recorder player , and choir director.

Live and act

Hans-Jürg Meier grew up in Rüschlikon and lived in Basel . He studied recorder with Conrad Steinmann at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and composition with Roland Moser at the Hochschule für Musik Basel . He started composing in 1991, since 1995 he has also worked with sound installations and since 1998 with free improvisation music. From 1997 to 2001 he worked at the Kaskadenkondensator Basel and from 1999 to 2004 he was the artistic director of the festival for improvised and composed contemporary music in the Gare du Nord Basel . In 2001 he won the Prix ​​Marguerite de Reding of the Swiss Tonkünstlerverein with the improvisation quartet Babels Besen . In 2004/05 he was a member of the Istituto Svizzero di Roma (ISR) and in 2006 completed a work stay at the Spazio culturale of the ISR in Venice . He was also President of the Swiss Music Edition (sme).

The focus of his composition was increasingly on thematic musical translations from architecture, in conjunction with the connection to nature, form and beauty.

Meier lived with his partner, the musician Sarah Giger and their son in Basel.
