The Preinsfeld gypsum mine is a former opencast and underground mine of gypsum in Preinsfeld , a district of Heiligenkreuz in the Vienna Woods , southwest of Vienna.

The occurrence in the area of Preinsfeld, Füllenberg (northeast of Heiligenkreuz, historically known as Füllendorf ) and Groisbach (near Alland) was one of the more important gypsum deposits in Austria. It has been known since at least the 18th century and was especially dismantled in the early days of the company . The plaster of paris was trampled in Gaaden and was known as Gaadener plaster .

From the Second World War, the mine on the Hühnerkogel  ( 447  m above sea level ), half a kilometer north of the town, was operated by the lime and cement manufacturer Perlmooser ( Gipsbergbau Preinsfeld GmbH ), from 1962 as a pit field with the size of 3  pit sizes (approx . 15 hectares), and today belongs to the Lafarge Perlmooser Holding . In 2001, the mine had to be shut down after ongoing gypsum ingress and flooding. Due to the unstable mountain location, it is now a restricted area and is to be filled in in the coming years.

The occurrence has historically been shown in several natural pings . The plaster of paris was driven up to 40 meters deep and drowned at the bottom . It extends in Werfener layers , which mark the border between Kalkwienerwald and Flyschwienerwald (sandstones). The Seegrotte near Hinterbrühl , today a show mine, is also known from this zone .
