Agave flexi spina is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Century Agave".

description

Agave flexispina grows singly or in groups. The open, small rosettes reach heights of growth of 25 to 35 cm and a diameter of 50 to 70 cm. The variable, strong bluish, yellow-green colored leaves are 16 to 30 cm long and 6 to 8 cm wide. The wavy, brown edged leaf margins are serrated. The flexibly arranged, brown to gray terminal mandrel is 2.5 to 3.5 cm long.

The paniculate, narrow, straight to curved inflorescence is 2.5 to 3.5 m high. The green to yellow flowers are 50 to 70 mm long and appear in the upper area of ​​the inflorescence and reach the tip, on loose, irregularly arranged branches. The cylindrical to cup-shaped flower tube is 13 to 18 mm long.

The variably shaped brown, three-chamber capsule fruits are 35 to 45 mm long and 15 to 17 mm wide. The moon-shaped, black seeds are 5.5 to 7 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

Systematics and distribution

Agave flexispina grows in Mexico in the states of Durango , Zacatecas and Chihuahua on stony slopes, in grass and woodlands at an altitude of 1,300 to 2,300 m. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.

The first description by William Trelease was published in 1920.

Agave flexispina is a representative of the Ditepalae group . The rosette and the inflorescence are overall narrower in contrast to other species of the Ditepalae group. It is similar to Agave palmeri and Agave shrevei , but there are differences in the flower structure.

Agave flexispina is grown in the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.
