Giuseppe Di Donna O.SS.T. (* August 23, 1901 in Rutigliano , metropolitan city of Bari , Italy ; † January 1, 1952 in Andria ) was Bishop of Andria .

Life

Di Donna, the youngest of nine children in a wealthy family, joined the Trinitarian Order at the age of eleven. In 1916 he was sent to Livorno as a novice , spent years studying in Rome from 1918 and was ordained priest on May 18, 1924 by Cardinal Vicar Basilio Pompili . From 1926 he worked as a missionary in Madagascar .

Pope Pius XII then appointed him bishop of Andria on February 2, 1940, after Di Donna had returned from Africa at the request of the Pope in 1939. He was ordained bishop on March 31, 1940 by Raffaele Carlo Cardinal Rossi , secretary of the Consistorial Congregation . Co- consecrators were the future Cardinal Celso Benigno Luigi Costantini , then secretary of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide , and Francesco Petronelli , Archbishop of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie . The first years of his tenure were marked by the Second World War and heavy disputes between farmers and landowners, in which he tried to mediate. Here he was personally inclined to the poorer farmers. With the pastoral letter L'Edificio sociale published in 1944, he emphasized the importance of charitable work, especially in view of the effects of the war years. In December 1950, under Di Donna's leadership, a diocesan synod took place in Andria, which dealt particularly with the strengthening of Christianity against materialist ideologies.

Death and beatification process

Giuseppe Di Donna died in 1952 after a long illness. The beatification process was opened as early as 1956 . In 1998 the Apulian bishops recognized Di Donna's heroic degree of virtue, as a result of which this was given by Pope Benedict XVI. Declared Venerable Servant of God on July 3, 2008 .
