In 1808 the family moved to Milan, the then capital of Italy, where he worked in the cathedral workshop and attended the academy. In 1813 he was awarded a prize by the Accademia della Brera. The scholarship associated with the award enabled him to study in Rome. In Rome he completed his artistic training at the Scuola del Nudo in the Palazzo Venezia , at the Accademia Lombardo-Veneta and at Canova. De Fabris worked for Antonio Canova , who had a strong artistic influence. The genius on Canova's tomb in the Frari church is from De Fabris in Venice.

De Fabri's drawings are kept in the library of the Instituto d'Arte in Nove.
