Give Us Barabbas! is an American television film from 1961 and is about Barabbas , who, according to the biblical account , was pardoned by Pontius Pilate in place of Jesus Christ .

action

At the time of the Roman occupation of Galilee , Barabbas , leader of the revolution against the Romans, calmly awaits his execution. But the Roman governor Pontius Pilate gives the people the choice of whether Barabbas should be crucified or Jesus Christ , who says of himself that he is the King of the Jews. The people choose Barabbas.

Upon his release from prison, Barabbas learns that the people were paid by the Romans to demand his release. His beloved Mara, who did not advocate his release, believes that Barabbas was released because the Romans wanted to get rid of Jesus. Barabbas' friends find witnesses to the bribery of the people and believe Barabbas to be its author; Barabbas is expelled from the group. Barabbas wants to find out what really happened.

At the Golghata of Jesus 'execution site - Jesus has already died and is in the grave - a centurion tells Barabbas about Jesus' execution and his words that God may forgive people because they do not know what they are doing.

Barabbas seeks out Pontius Pilate, who rejects responsibility for Jesus' death sentence and says that Jesus spoke in riddles during the interrogation. Moved by scruples that an innocent man was executed for him, Barabbas asks Pilate to be returned to prison in place of his friend Elisha. Elisha accuses Barabbas of a lack of courage.

Barabbas seeks out Jesus' father Joseph of Nazareth and gives him the crown of thorns that Jesus wore before his execution. Joseph is deeply impressed by the words that Jesus preached.

At Jesus' grave, Barabbas learns that Jesus has risen again . Barabbas feels guilty, but Jesus' disciples explain to him that Jesus forgave sinners and that life is a way of searching for the truth; Barabbas has been chosen for this path and has already embarked on this search.
