The Gjanica (pronunciation: [ ɟaniʦa ], Albanian  also  Gjanicë ) is a river in southwestern Albania . The source is located south of the Shpirag Mountains in the Mallakastra region , about 18 kilometers southeast of Ballsh . The river flows through Fier  and after 58 kilometers flows into the Seman on the northern city limits , which flows here through the Myzeqe plain.

The Gjanica is one of the most by water pollution suffering rivers in the country. The reason for this is the many oil production facilities near Ballsh, which discharge their wastewater into the river without being treated. The proportions of nitrogen dioxide , ammonium and phosphorus  are particularly high; there is also a lack of oxygen.
