The glassworks Freital GmbH is a glass manufacturer based in the Saxon town of Freital . The company was founded as the royal Saxon Friedrichshütte in Döhlen , later a district of Freital, and has specialized in custom-made products and the production of smaller quantities due to its small melting capacity.

The glassworks has a melting furnace which can process 120 tons of molten glass per day and produce around 80 million bottles per year. Among other things, wine, juice and water bottles as well as glasses for food (e.g. nudossi ), medicines and cosmetics are produced. The company had around 80 employees in September 2014.

The Freital glassworks is the smallest in Germany and has a market share of just under one percent.

history

Friedrichshütte around 1856

In 1816 Adolf Theodor Roscher submitted plans for a coal-based glassworks to the government in Dresden . In 1818 it was built as a royal Friedrichshütte, which began operations in 1820. Around 1850 it was converted into the “Sächsische Glashüttengesellschaft” stock corporation. On January 20, 1861, the founder Adolf Theodor Roscher died.

Hollow glasses and bottles were produced until 1862. After it was closed in 1862, Arthur Dathe von Burgk bought the hut and left it empty. In 1864 Carl Zechel took over the hut. In 1871 Friedrich Siemens acquired the Friedrichshütte as his second hut next to the glass factory in Dresden. The Döhlener Hütte became part of the Friedrich Siemens company . In 1888 the Friedrich Siemens glassworks in Dresden, Döhlen and Neusattl as well as some branches and the technical office in Dresden were converted into a stock corporation. The new company was called Aktiengesellschaft für Glasindustrie vorm. Friedrich Siemens . Friedrich Siemens died in 1904. White glass production began in 1924. In 1943 the company was renamed Siemens Glas AG .

On May 8, 1945, the Directorate fled from the Soviet occupation zone lying factory to the single in the western zones remaining glass factory of Siemens Glas AG in Wirges . On April 17, 1948, Siemens-Glaswerke Freital, Dresden and Copitz became public property .

In 1951 the VEB Ostglas Siemens Glas Freital (Sa.) operation of the VVB Glasindustrie (Ost) Weißwasser was founded.

In 1956 the VEB Ostglas was dissolved, the VEB Glaswerk Freital was created , two years later it became the operation of the VVB Glas Dresden . In 1964 the plant became the operation of VVB Household and Packaging Glass Weißwasser , from 1972 the plant was directly subordinate to the Ministry of Glass and Ceramics Industry .

In 1979 the plant became the operation of the VEB Combine Container and Packaging Glass Bernsdorf . The VEB glass work Coswig- Neusörnewitz was incorporated as an operating portion. In 1985 the plant became the operation of the VEB-Kombinate Lausitzer Glas Weißwasser .

After the political change in 1990, the factory was renamed Glaswerk Freital GmbH . In 1996 the PD Group took over the company and continued to operate it as Glaswerk Freital .

In the spring of 2013, Glashütte Freital GmbH was separated from the PD Group and has been operated under its own responsibility since then. Part of the property has remained with the PD Group. In 2017, a 2400 square meter warehouse was inaugurated on the company premises, which enables the covered storage of all finished products. The construction of a further production hall with an additional melting furnace, which began in 2018, is expected to increase the daily melting capacity by 150 tons and annual production to 180 million units.
