Club history

The Glatzer Gebirgs-Verein (GGV) was founded on March 2nd, 1881 in the district town of Glatz ( Silesia ) as the "Gebirgs-Verein der Grafschaft Glatz". The Glatzer Rose ( globe flower ) was chosen as the club symbol in 1881 and is still used as such today. The change of name from the "Mountain Association of the County of Glatz" to "Glatzer Gebirgs-Verein (GGV)" was decided in 1888 in new territory near Wartha. Membership in the then "Association of German Tourist Associations", later the " Association of German Mountain and Hiking Associations ", was declared shortly after it was founded in 1883 as the "Mountain Association for the County of Glatz" before 1888 and existed until the end of the Second World War .

The association magazine "Die Grafschaft Glatz" was launched in 1906 and was last published in 1943. On the 25th anniversary of the GGV's 25th anniversary, the GGV's local history museum was opened in 1906, which changed its location several times due to its growing size and was closed after the Second World War. As early as 1883, the association set up a club library. The Glatzer Heimatbücherei was founded in 1922, the Glatzer Heimatarchiv in 1923 by the GGV. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 1931 with an impressive pageant. In 1939 the association consisted of 62 local groups and had several thousand members throughout the Reich.

The last annual general meeting of the old GGV took place in 1944. The end of the war and the expulsion of the Germans sealed the fate of the association. As a result of the expulsion, the GGV lost its hiking areas, its property and its creative works. In 1951 the "Glatzer Gebirgs-Verein (GGV) Braunschweig local group" was re-established. The "Glatzer Rose" ( globe flower ) of the old GGV from 1881 was retained as a club symbol. The club colors are the "red-yellow" colors of County Glatz. In 1965 the word "Ortsgruppe" was deleted from the club name.

As early as 1984, the GGV was awarded the Eichendorff plaque for its services to hiking, home and the environment by Federal President Karl Carstens . In May 1987 the GGV home office opened in Braunschweig. The club flag was inaugurated in 1990. In addition, the club owns two pennants from 1966 and 1985. After the dissolution of the "GGV Berlin" in 1995, the club's property could be taken over. In October 1998, for the first time since it was re-established in Braunschweig in 1951, there were more than 1000 members in the GGV. To date, the number of members has consistently exceeded 1000 people.
