history

Insight into the foundry

Pilsner and Budweiser line

The foundry family probably comes from Brixen . Jan (Johann) Perner has been casting bells in Pilsen since at least 1701 . In this city there is still the Glockenhof (Zvony dvor) today . The first documented bells from Pilsen were in Ledce , Diocese of Pilsen. They were destroyed in the course of the bell recapture in the First World War. The bells of the Pilsen bell founders were cataloged and photographically documented by the University of Prague (Tomas Chvatal).

The foundry in Budweis was founded in 1760 by Johann Josef Perner, a descendant of the Perner family of bell foundries based in Pilsen. In 1718 the Pilsen caster cast the oldest still preserved Perner bell for the basilica in Waldsassen . His brother Matthias moved to Eichstätt to work in the local cannon and piece foundry. The Pilsener Linie died out in 1904 with Robert Perner. The Budweiser line was continued by Rudolf II. Perner . In 1928 he took over the Budweiser business from his father Rudolf I.

Move to Passau

Rudolf II. Perner moved the company to Passau in 1947. He developed the Perner major rib (bells with a major third in a partial tone structure).

In 1956 the federal patent for the PF system (Perner Feichtinger) was granted. In 1985 the European patent was granted for the first electronically controlled bell ringing machine. The basic principle of converting an impulse from the motor to the ringing height and regulating it accordingly can be found today in all common ringing machines that enable dynamic control of the bell and keep the ringing angle constant.

In 1968 the company was run by Rudolf III. accepted. However, he died in 1973 at the age of 43. Rudolf II. Perner therefore took over his previous business again and ran it until his death in 1982. In the meantime, the business was run by the family members. Through inheritance, the company was divided into Rudolf Perner GmbH & Co KG and Glockengiesserei Perner GmbH.

Since 1987

In 1987 Rudolf jun. the company while still training as a partner. After studying at the University of Passau and training as a bell foundryman, he took over the management of the company in 1993 and passed the master's examination in bell foundry craft in 2001.

In 2001 the bell chair for the Berlin Liberty Bell was manufactured. For this purpose, the bell had been transported from the welding shop to the foundry and had already rung there for the test so that the clapper could be optimally adjusted.

In 1998 the Karlsruhe bell foundry was taken over by Carl Metz GmbH. The company, founded in Karlsruhe in 1904, was then integrated into the Passau site in 2002. Thus the actual bell foundry of the Karlsruhe founding tradition of the Bachert brothers came together with the tradition of Schilling Heidelberg in 2002 in Passau.

In the various rib traditions, individual bells with unique timbres can be made. In Sandl in Upper Austria, in Windischgarsten, in St. Florian, in Veiprty (Czech Republic) and in many other places, chimes were cast in their own harmonies (different ribs, minor and major bells) in cooperation with the foundries.

In 2003 the old rib of the bell founder Matthias Perner was reconstructed, a small septum rib, of medium weight.

This rib was used to cast bells for the Eichstätter Dom (historical bells) and later for the Karlskirche in Vienna.

In 2005 the company was represented at the International Crafts Fair Munich IHM . The new bell for St. Magdalena in Linz served as an exhibition object, including bell machines and a bell chair.

Between 2013 and 2016 the casting operation was stopped, the company restructured and renamed from "Rudolf Perner GmbH & Co. KG" to "Glockengießerei Perner GmbH". Today, the repair of existing bell systems is the main business, the actual bell foundry has become a secondary branch of business activity.

The Glockengießerei Perner GmbH currently employs around 15 permanent employees in Passau and 6 employees in an assembly company in Austria.
