Glottiphyllum is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words "γλωττίς" (glottis) for "tongue" and for "φύλλον" (phyllon) for "leaf" and refers to the tongue-shaped leaves of some species.

description

The plants of the genus Glottiphyllum grow compact to mat-forming with a few to many branches. Most species have short, thick rhizomes . Their tap roots and adventitious roots are thickened. The shoots are upright to prostrate. In the same-leaved species, the leaves are cross-opposed and in the uneven-leaved species they are arranged in two rows. The leaves are initially thick or flat and later belt or tongue-shaped. The epidermis contains bladder cells that are often elongated into hairs along the edges, while they are reduced on the sides.

The stalked or sessile flowers are apparently single. However, it is a monochasial anthocladium in which leaves and terminal flowers are formed alternately on the stem axis. There are four sepals . The deep yellow petals , rarely white at the base, are fused at the base and form a funnel. There are 150 to 250 (rarely up to 500) stamens , whereas staminodes are absent.

The capsule fruits are eight to nine (rarely five to 14) fanned. The seeds are larger than 1 millimeter and rarely smooth.

The chromosome number is .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Glottiphyllum is mainly found in the Lesser Karoo and adjacent areas in the South African province of Western Cape and Eastern Cape . The plants mostly grow in slate and sandstone, some species also in clay, between stones containing quartz or on rocks. The annual rainfall is between 125 and 500 millimeters, where most of the precipitation falls in the months of March and November.

It was first described in 1921 by Nicholas Edward Brown . The holotype is Glottiphyllum linguiforme . According to Heidrun Hartmann , the genus Glottiphyllum includes the following species:

The easy hybridization of the species with one another and the very variable shape of the leaves has led to the fact that numerous species have been described that are now only regarded as synonyms .
