Gnadenkirche (Mannheim)
The Gnadenkirche is a Protestant church in Mannheim 's Gartenstadt district . It was built between 1948 and 1949 according to Otto Bartning's plans and is a listed building .
history
The garden city was laid out according to plan from 1912. The evangelical residents attended the service in the Waldhöfer Pauluskirche . In the 1930s, the community planned to build its own church. The rectory could still be completed according to the plans of architect Helmuth Thoma , but the church was no longer built because of the Second World War . Even after that, due to the great need, a church initially seemed unthinkable.
The emergency church program of the Evangelical Church in Germany came to the rescue . It provided for simple buildings that could be carried out inexpensively according to standardized plans by Otto Bartning. The Garden City Church followed the so-called Type B and served as a template for a number of other buildings in the program. As with the rectory, Helmuth Thoma was entrusted with the construction management, who was also partly responsible for the interior design. On June 19, 1949 the Gnadenkirche was finally inaugurated. The church tower was built by 1954 and the bells were consecrated the following year. In 1989 the windows in the choir were replaced by artistically designed stained glass windows. In 2009 the interior was renovated.
description
The Gnadenkirche is centrally located in the west of the garden city at the intersection of several streets on a triangular property. The outer walls and the church tower on the side consist of visible red rubble blocks.
Inside, the brickwork is plastered white. Above it is a band of raised windows. The wooden gable roof construction was left open and shows the skeleton construction . In the east, the brick choir adjoins with a barrel vault . The organ was built by Steinmeyer in 1952 . The ringing consists of four bells .
