The gnome nightjar ( Chordeiles pusillus ) is a species of bird in the nightjar family (Caprimulgidae).
It occurs in the northern countries of South America ( Bolivia , Brazil , Guyana , Colombia , Suriname , Venezuela ).
Their distribution area includes lightly forested, open areas, dry savannas , tropical and subtropical grasslands that are seasonally humid or flooded.

The gnome nightjar is by far the smallest of the nightjar and is similar to the Texas nightjar . She is 15–19 cm tall and weighs around 33 g. The top is brownish with gray-white and yellow-brown points. The rump is pale whitish, a neck band is not adjacent. The throat is yellowish brown in the female, white in the male, which also has a white tail band. In flight a pale light-colored wing band is noticeable (white in the male, yellow-brown in the female). In the resting position, the wing tips do not reach the tips of the tail.

The call of the male is described as a melodious, quickening trill “kkkk-kuree”.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- C. p. septentrionalis ( Hellmayr ) , 1908 - East Colombia to Suriname and North Brazil
- C. p. esmeraldae J. T. Zimmer and Phelps, Sr , 1947 - southeastern Colombia, southern Venezuela, and extreme northwestern Brazil
- C. p. xerophilus Dickerman , 1988 - extreme northeast of Brazil ( Paraíba , Pernambuco )
- C. p. novaesi Dickerman , 1988 - Northeastern Brazil ( Maranhão , Piauí )
- C. p. pusillus Gould , 1861, nominate form - Eastern Brazil ( Tocantins , Bahia , Goiás )
- C. p. saturatus Pinto and Camargo , 1957 - Brazil (southeast of the Amazon , Pará and Mato Grosso ) as well as the extreme east of Bolivia
Way of life
The food consists of insects that are hunted on the fly. The nightjar is crepuscular and occurs mostly singly or in swarms of up to 20 individuals.
The breeding season is in January in Colombia, probably in October in Venezuela and Guyana.
Hazardous situation
The gnome nightjar is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
