Gola is a British sporting goods manufacturer that mainly makes shoes. The Harrier model gained fame especially in Europe. The company was founded in 1905, making it one of the oldest sporting goods manufacturers in Great Britain.

history

The company was founded on May 22, 1905 in Leicester , England . In the early years the company mainly manufactured boots and men's shoes, but also rugby and soccer shoes, which were advertised in the 1930s with the slogan Gola means Goals . During the Second World War , boots were primarily made for the British armed forces . After 1945 Gola concentrated again on the football shoe business and equipped several English clubs. In the 1970s , Alfred Ramsey was won over to the company's board of directors. Various models for tennis , cricket , athletics and rugby were also developed. Due to difficult economic times in the 1980s, the market direction gradually changed and the production of lifestyle models for the masses began. Since this did not bring the desired success, the company was sold to the Jacobson Group, which began to reissue older models and thus give Gola a retro image , which has been underpinned with the Gola Classic Line since 2000 .

Gola has coined the term trainer for all sports shoes on offer since 1968 , after which the word found its way into the Oxford English Dictionary in 1977 .

Gola sponsored the English Football Conference from 1984 to 1986 , which at that time was also called the Gola League .
