The gold-and-silver chrysanthemum ( Chrysanthemum pacificum ) is a species of the genus Chrysanthemum ( Chrysanthemum ) within the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is endemic to the Japanese island of Honshu . It is used as an ornamental plant.

Vegetative characteristics

The gold-and-silver chrysanthemum is a perennial herbaceous plant or a dwarf shrub and reaches heights of 10 to 45 centimeters. It is evergreen and forms subterranean runners .

The alternate leaves have an egg-shaped outline, are about 5 centimeters long, narrow in a wedge into the stem, usually have two (one to three) coarse, rounded serrated teeth on both sides and are shiny green on the top, silver hairy on the underside and on the edge .

Generative characteristics

In a broadly branched, umbrella-like overall inflorescence, there are (five to) usually 15 to 25 spherical flower heads with many individual flowers. Ray florets (ray flowers) are not present. The tubular flowers (disc flowers) are yellow.

The flowering period extends from (September) October to November.

Occurrence

The gold-and-silver chrysanthemum is only found on the Japanese island of Honshu near the coast.

The first description of Chrysanthemum pacificum was made in 1928 by Takenoshin Nakai in Botanical Magazine, Tokyo , Volume 42, page 462. synonyms for Chrysanthemum pacificum Nakai are: Dendranthema pacificum (Nakai) Kitam. , Ajania pacifica (Nakai) K.Bremer & Humphries .

The gold-and-silver chrysanthemum is widely used as an ornamental plant in perennial beds, window boxes and pots, and as a cut flower . It has probably been in culture since 1990.
