Golden Smog is a group of musicians who form a so-called supergroup with a relatively loose cast . At different times, members of Soul Asylum , The Replacements , Wilco , The Jayhawks , Run Westy Run , The Honeydogs and Big Star played together. The name is derived from a figure from the Flintstones . Which in turn is the nickname of a parody by the singer Mel Tormé (The Velvet Fog).

history

In 1989 the band first met in Minneapolis . 'Golden Smog' was originally founded in response to the then dominant punk and hardcore punk scene in the twin cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul . The line-up changed frequently and the only permanent members were the guitarist of the band Run Westie Run , Kraig Johnson and the guitarists Dan Murphy ( Soul Asylum ) and Gary Louris ( The Jayhawks ).

It's hard to say when exactly the band was formed. Previously, in 1987, they played in the bars of Minneapolis under the name 'The Take It To The Limit Band', as an Eagles - cover band . This band consisted of Dan Murphy and Dave Pirner (both from Soul Asylum ), Jim Boquist (later a member of Son Volt ) and Martin Zellar ( Gear Daddies ). They always ended their show with the hit song Bangles Walk Like an Egyptian . The same band later played a cover program with songs by the Rolling Stones under the name Her Satanic Majesty's Paycheck .

The history of the band between the early days of the cover bands and the first album is unclear. In retrospect, it's hard to pinpoint the point at which you can speak of 'Golden Smog' as a band. Perhaps it is better to say that the musicians' verve could already be heard in the cover projects. In 1992 Dan Murphy, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman (bassist with The Jayhawks ), Kraig Johnson and Chris Mars ( The Replacements ) recorded the cover EP called On Golden Smog as their first CD . This was followed in 1996 the debut album Down By The Old Mainstream , . It was recorded in the Pachyderm Recording Studio . The band consisted at that time of Kraig Johnson, Dan Murphy, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Wilco singer Jeff Tweedy , and drummer of the Honeydogs , Noah Levy . It should be noted that some of the musicians recorded under pseudonyms , as they were bound in existing contracts. A few years later the band reformed with Jody Stephens (of Big Star ) on drums. Jody played with the band during the 1996 New Years Concerts in Chicago. In 1998 they released the album Weird Tales with a new line-up .

In 2005 the band recorded a new album in Spain called Another Fine Day . This was released on July 18, 2006 on Lost Highway Records . Both Jody Stephens and Linda Pitmon of Zuzu's Petals and Steve Wynn's Miracle 3 play drums on this album . You can hear the interplay on this album, although Jeff Tweedy only contributed a few songs. In the summer of 2006, the band started a tour that Tweedy was missing because he was in the studio with Wilco or successfully completed a drug withdrawal.

Trivia

Allegedly, John King (of The Litter ) is the previous owner of the guitar of Gary Louris (a Gibson SG from 1968), the guitarist of the Jayhawks and Golden Smog. This guitar was also owned by Kevin Waddick from 1977 to 1986 . Chris Osgood , the guitarist of the legendary punk band The Suicide Commandos , suggested that Kevin Waddick sell him his guitar, but then informed Gary Louris that the guitar was for sale.
