Golden Times - Bitter Times is a family series on ARD . It describes the fate of the middle-class Vollmer family in the Roaring Twenties and the time of National Socialism . The broadcast took place in 1981 and 1985 in the regional evening program.

The family saga Golden Times - Bitter Zeiten describes the fate of the sisters Victoria and Susanne and their father Fritz Vollmer between the end of the First and the end of the Second World War .
Victoria marries her childhood sweetheart Walter Bielstock in the early 1920s. When he becomes involved in the attempted murder on Matthias Erzberger , the marriage fails. A few years later, Victoria and the Jewish journalist Dr. Robert Wolff a couple. Their daughter Friederike is soon born. During the turmoil of the Nazi era, the family had to flee several times, Victoria and Robert separated and found each other again.
Susanne, who works as a chambermaid in the prestigious "Park Hotel", falls in love with an American journalist and fraudster and travels to Switzerland after him. Upon her return, she becomes pregnant. The innkeeper Werner Brombach, whom she married soon after, accepts the son Friedrich as his own child. Friedrich later took part in World War II as a committed soldier and returned home in 1944 as a disabled man. He takes his own life after an unhappy love affair.
Father Fritz Vollmer initially owned a hairdressing salon. After the bankruptcy he found a job in the salon of the "Parkhotel" and soon rose to the position of boss. He marries Anette Seidelmann, the hotel's former housekeeper. Fritz Vollmer developed into a staunch National Socialist.

The first season, entitled Golden Times, takes place during the Weimar Republic . Season two is entitled Golden Times - Bitter Times . It begins with the National Socialists seizing power.
