Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba

Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba , Prince of Maratra, (born December 31, 1585 in Cabra , † February 16, 1635 in Montalbán de Córdoba ) was a Spanish general in the Thirty Years War .

Life

Siege of Frankenthal

He came from the noble Fernández de Córdoba family .

After the Spanish general Ambrosio Spinola had occupied the Lower Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine in the summer of 1620 , he transferred the supreme command there to Córdoba in the spring of 1621 and returned to Brussels. Córdoba besieged Frankenthal in 1621 , but had to break off the siege on October 25th when Ernst von Mansfeld moved from the Upper Palatinate. In 1622 he supported the Bavarian league forces under Tilly in the fight against the generals of the Palatinate side: On May 6th, Córdoba and Tilly defeated the margrave Georg Friedrich von Baden-Durlach near Wimpfen am Neckar , on June 20th Duke Christian von Braunschweig near Höchst on the Main .

After Mansfeld and Braunschweig withdrew from the Rhine Palatinate, Cordoba was called back there to protect the southern (Spanish) Netherlands . However, he did not succeed in preventing Mansfeld and Christian from moving from the Maas to Holland. On August 29, 1622 they defeated the Spanish army under Córdoba with high losses in its self-chosen defensive position at Fleurus .

From 1621 to 1623 Córdoba commanded the Spanish armed forces in the Palatinate and then took over command of the army of Flanders until 1626 . During the War of the Mantuan Succession he commanded the Spanish troops in the Duchy of Milan .

By Johann Philipp Abelinus the story of the shepherd is († 1634) Hans Warsh from Oggersheim handed, who had remained at the siege of Frankenthal was the only one in Oggersheim and its towns have passed to General Cordoba. He behaved very chivalrously towards him, made friends with him and even took over the sponsorship of Hans Warsch's newborn child. Oggersheim then remained completely undestroyed and was not plundered. The episode was also included in Friedrich Wilhelm Hebel's Palatine book of legends .
