Goo is the sixth studio album by the noise rock band Sonic Youth and was released in June 1990. Goo was the band's first album on a major label: Geffen Records . On September 13, 2005, the album was re-released as an extended Deluxe Edition.
music
Tunic (Song for Karen) is about Karen Carpenter, the singer and drummer for the Carpenters , who died of anorexia in 1983. Gordon, who wrote the lyrics, sings about Karen, who meets Elvis Presley , Janis Joplin and Dennis Wilson in heaven . The text for Kool Thing is inspired by an interview Kim Gordon conducted with LL Cool J for Spin . Mildred Pierce is one of the first songs Sonic Youth wrote as a band. It is inspired by the film noir Mildred Pierce (German title: As long as a heart beats ) from 1945. In the video by David Markey, the star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood is shown by the leading actress Joan Crawford . Sofia Coppola plays the role of Mildred Pierce in the video.
Cover
The front and back of the cover show comic drawings by Raymond Pettibon . His inspiration for the cover was a newspaper photo depicting the couple Maureen Hindley and David Smith who testified as witnesses in a 1966 serial murder trial by the Moors Murderers . Bassist Kim Gordon writes in her 2014 autobiography, Girl in a Band , that the pair was based on the black and white cover of Badlands , Terrence Malicks ' first feature film . The cover is also a homage to the bands from the hardcore / punk scene who released records on SST Records , because they used Pettibon's drawings for their covers, for example Black Flag or Minutemen . Drawings by Raymond Pettibon were also used for the Maxi by Disappearer .
production
The tracks were recorded in 1989 at Sorcerer and Green Street Studios in New York City . Instead of having the album produced by U2 producer Daniel Lanois , as suggested by Geffen , Sonic Youth took over the production themselves together with Nick Sansano, who was also a sound engineer at Daydream Nation .
