Daydream Nation is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Sonic Youth and was released in October 1988. Daydream Nation was the band's last album to be released on an independent label (Enigma Records) before their deal with Geffen . The cover artwork comes from the German artist Gerhard Richter (front cover: "Kerze", 1983; back cover: "Kerze", 1982). The album was recorded on Greene Street in New York , the producer was Nick Sansano. Two of the album tracks, Teen Age Riot and Silver Rocket , were released as single. Both are among the best known pieces by Sonic Youth.
Emergence
The album was made in Studio A of Greene Street Studios in New York . The producer Nick Sansano had only produced hip-hop artists until then , but the band was still impressed with his work. The recordings started in mid-July 1988 and ended on August 18 of the same year. The band had never paid so much for their recordings before - the total cost was about $ 30,000.

Bonus tracks
The 2007 deluxe edition of the album contains two CDs which, in addition to the above-mentioned pieces, contain live recordings and five bonus tracks, four of which are not included on the album. These songs are cover versions of Within You Without You by the Beatles , Touch Me I'm Sick of Mudhoney , Computer Age by Neil Young and Electricity of Captain Beefheart .

Daydream Nation is considered to be one of the groundbreaking albums of the 1980s because of its great influence on the alternative rock genre. The album received unanimous praise from the press and achieved the highest rating there from Allmusic , Rolling Stone , Blender and Pitchfork Media , among others . It can also be found in the favorites lists of numerous music magazines and websites, for example it is at number 7 of the 100 best albums of the 1980s at Pitchfork Media, at number 329 of the 500 best albums of all time at Rolling Stone and at number 45 of the 100 best albums by Decade. The New Musical Express leads Daydream Nation at number 41 of the 500 best albums of all time. The German magazine Musikexpress selected the album at number 9 of the 50 best albums of the 1980s.
