Gordon H. Pirie

Sir Gordon Hamish Martin Pirie (born February 10, 1918 in Oxford , † July 23, 2003 ) was a British politician.

Pirie's family emigrated to Kenya after the end of the First World War , where his father built a cattle ranch and a horse breeding facility. In 1926 he returned to England as a scholar of King's , the Eton College to visit. In 1938 he entered RAF College Cranwell and was trained as a fighter pilot.

During the Second World War he initially served as an aviator in the 201 Squadron in Sullom Voe on the Shetland Islands and flew missions against German submarines in the Atlantic . He was later transferred to New Zealand . There he first set up a training center for the Royal Air Force and later became Director of Operations for the Pacific in the fight against Japan . In 1946 he retired from the Army with the rank of Group Captain and was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his services .

After the war, Pirie was mainly involved in local politics in London: in 1949 he became councilor of the City of Westminster for the constituency of Covent Garden for the Conservative Party . In the city council, he was initially responsible for housing and road construction. The attempt to win a seat in the House of Commons in the constituency of Dundee West for the National Liberal Party failed in 1955. In 1959/1960 Pirie was Mayor of Westminster, then chairman of the city council until 1969. In 1974/75 he was again mayor (Lord Mayor) and in 1982 he retired from the city council.

As a local politician, Pirie was also active on the European level: From 1966 to 1982 he was a member of the British delegation to the Conference of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe . There he served several times as Vice President and was President of this institution from 1978 to 1980.

Pirie combined numerous offices and functions in public life in Londos: U. a. He was Governor of Westminster School from 1962 to 1994 , from 1965 to 1992 member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Albert Hall , Justice of the Peace and since 1962 Deputy Lieutenant for the County of London and since 1978 Deputy High Bailiff of Westminster. In addition, he was involved in various organizations related to the Royal Air Force.

In 1969 Pirie was accepted as Knight of Justice in the Order of Saint John and was Commander of the St John Ambulance until 1975 , which corresponds to the German Johanniter Accident Aid .
