Gordon William Kirby (born June 20, 1934 , Wallasey , Cheshire ; † May 6, 2011 ) succeeded Ralph Raphael from 1972 to 1997 as Regius Professor of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow .

Life

Kirby was born on June 20, 1934, the son of William Admiral Kirby and his wife, Frances Teresa Kirby, née Townson. He studied chemistry at Gonville and Caius College of the University of Cambridge . In 1955 he achieved his Bachelor (BA) over MA to D.Sc., 1958. He moved to Imperial College London , where he lectured from 1958 to 1967. In 1967 he was appointed professor of organic chemistry at Loughborough University in Loughborough . In 1972 he was appointed Regius Professor at the University of Glasgow.

honors and awards

In 1956, Kirby won the Schuldham Plate postgraduate prize from Gonville and Caius College. In 1969 he was awarded the Corday Morgan Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry and in 1974 the Tilden Lectureship of the Royal Society. In 1975 he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

research

Kirby specialized in organic chemistry, where he studied the reactivity and properties of organic nitrogen compounds.
