Goswin from Herike

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Goswin von Herike († 1359 ) was master of the order of the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order from December 1345 to September 1359 ( Landmeister of Livonia of the Teutonic Order ).

Goswin von Herike probably came from Westphalia . He was Komtur von Viljandi (German Fellin ) during the uprising on St. George's Night (1343/45), when Estonian peasants rebelled against the German and Danish feudal lords . At the end of 1345 he succeeded Burchard von Dreileben as landmaster of Old Livonia .

During his tenure, Goswin supported the bishop of Tartu ( Dorpat ) in the construction of the Vastseliina fortress ( Frouwenborch or Neuhausen ), which was located on the important trade routes between Tartu , Riga and Pskow ( Pleskau ) and was mainly directed against the Russian fortress of Isborsk .

Goswin von Herike also founded the Ordensburg Vasknarva ( Nyslott ) in 1349 on the strategically important upper reaches of the Narva River . He also had other fortresses and castles of the order built, especially on the eastern border. Especially the Hermannsfeste in Narva was considerably strengthened under his aegis.

Goswin von Herike died in 1359. After a brief interregnum by Andreas von Steinberg , Arnold de Vitinghove , who had been Commander of Tallinn ( Reval ) since 1348 , was his successor. Arnold ruled the order from February 1360 until his death in 1364.
