Gottfried Graf Huyn, Baron von Geleen , also Godefridus Comes from Huyn Baro de Geleen, (* in Flanders around 1598; † 1657 in Maastricht ) was an imperial field marshal .

Life

Gottfried Graf Huyn von Geleen , Baron von Geleen und Amstenraedt began his military career in Italy in 1615. At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War he returned to Germany and became an officer in the Anholt Regiment, which was later placed under the Bavarian command. He fought during the Danish-Lower Saxon War in various battles under Johann T'Serclaes von Tilly and Count Anholt . He was captured in Elze near Hildesheim and taken to Holstein. He was only released a year later. With the beginning of the Swedish War he became the commander of the city of Hameln . In 1631 he was promoted to colonel and also took over the Anholt regiment. In May 1631 he and his regiment were involved in the Magdeburg wedding . In September of that year he was able to flee after the devastating defeat of the Imperial League Army near Breitenfeld and in 1632 defended the fortress town of Wolfenbüttel against Duke Georg von Braunschweig-Calenberg together with his Lieutenant Colonel Johannes Ernst von Reuschenberg . In 1633 he was given command in the Westphalian district .

On April 20, 1632 he was accepted into the Teutonic Order . Only two years later - in 1634 - he was appointed Landkomtur of the Deutschordensballei Alden Biesen .

In 1636 he entered the imperial service as general sergeant, left the army shortly after General Johan Banérs was expelled from the Upper Palatinate in 1641 and retired to the Ballei Alden Biesen near Maastricht as Land Commander of the Teutonic Order . However, in 1644 he was taken over by Emperor Ferdinand III. entrusted with a generalate in the Westphalian district ; In 1646 he received the supreme command of some troops from Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria .

From 1634 to 1657 Gottfried Graf Huyn was the successor of Edmond Graf Huyn of the 35th provincial commander of Alden Biessen. In this office he enjoyed a high reputation, he set accents especially in the context of the slowly beginning Counter-Reformation through his great influence within the German Empire, by providing financial support to the founding of counter-reformation orders. During his tenure, Alden Biesen Castle was rebuilt, furnished with new furniture and a chapel was added.

Huyn took his leave in 1647 and died in Maastricht in 1657 at the age of around 50.
