Gottfried III. von Hohenlohe († September 3, 1322 in Würzburg ) was bishop of Würzburg from 1314 until his death .

Gottfried III. in the family context

Gottfried III. came from the noble and widely ramified Frankish family of Hohenlohe . His parents were Gottfried I von Hohenlohe and Elisabeth von Hohenzollern-Nürnberg. He was thus the uncle of the brothers Albrecht II of Hohenlohe , Bishop of Würzburg (1350-1372) and Friedrich von Hohenlohe , Prince-Bishop of Bamberg (1344-1352). The count of Gottfried III. refers to him as the third Würzburg bishop named Gottfried.

The coat of arms of the Hohenloher family shows two black leopards standing on top of one another, striding to the right with downcast tails.

Gottfried III. as a bishop

After the death of Andreas von Gundelfingen , there was initially a vacancy and the diocese was administered by a guardianship consisting of seven Würzburg canons . It was not until the end of 1317 that Gottfried III. documented as a sealer. The Rothenbuch community owes its first documentary mention to the bishop in 1318.

In the dispute over the throne of the Holy Roman Empire between Ludwig IV and Friedrich III. he took the side of the Habsburg Friedrich, as did the House of Hohenlohe and the Franconian nobility as a whole.

He got into a feud with the Henneberg family because of various collegiate fiefs , which was settled on April 8, 1319 by an arbitration award. In the following years he maintained good relations with this family.

Lorenz Fries reports about his grave in Würzburg Cathedral . At the beginning of the 18th century, his tombstone was re-labeled and incorrectly assigned to Bishop Gottfried II .
