Gottfried Luze

Gottfried Luze (born November 13, 1857 Wulzeshofen ; † October 21, 1940 in Vienna- Hernals) was an Austrian entomologist , beetle collector and senior high school teacher .

Live and act

Together with his friend and coleopterologist Maximilian Bernhauer (1866-1946), Luze collected and described several species of beetles, mainly from Carinthia , the Carniolan Alps and the Jeseníky Mountains . Mainly, he dedicated himself while the beetle family of rove beetles ( Staphylinidae Latreille 1802), in which he 169 species and 10 genera described. In this area he worked his way up to a specialist. In particular , he paid a lot of attention to the genus Tachinus ( Gravenhorst 1802). In his work, Luze had completely revised the systematics of the previously known and newly discovered species of this genus. Bernhauer dedicated the species of this genus, Tachinus luzei, first described in 1901 (Bernhauer 1901).

Luze has been listed in the Vienna address books since 1888 and apparently spent most of his life in Vienna . He published his first of 34 papers in 1900. The publication of his articles ended abruptly in 1911 with the publication of a first description of Philonthus (Rabigus) auropilosus (Luze 1912). Almost all of his works appeared in the negotiations of the Imperial and Royal Zoological and Botanical Society in Vienna . A single essay that did not deal with the short-winged species was published in the Berlin Entomological Journal (1902). In some of his work, Luze thanked many of the contemporary Viennese and Austrian coleopterologists, including Bernhauer, with whom he had close professional and friendly ties. Luze was a member of the Imperial and Royal Zoological and Botanical Society in Vienna.
