Gottfried Rieger

Gottfried Rieger (born May 1, 1764 in Tropplowitz , Austrian Silesia , † October 13, 1855 in Brno ) was a Bohemian conductor and music teacher .

Life

Gottfried Rieger was the son of a musician . At the age of 13 he became a member of Josef von Sedlnitzky's house chapel at Geppersdorf Palace ; there he learned to play a number of instruments. Rieger was trained in music theory by AD Brosmann in Weißwasser and went to Brno in 1787, where he worked as a music teacher and conductor at the Reduta Municipal Theater . From 1805 to 1808 he was Kapellmeister at Count Haugwitz on Namiest an der Oslawa , after which he lived as a music teacher - two years as a theater conductor - in Brno until his death.

In the musical life of the city, Rieger held an excellent position as a conductor of almost all musical performances, but especially as a teacher of the music institute he founded in 1828, which was decisive for the musical culture of Moravia. The cantatas , which are often devoted to patriotic themes, have become famous among his rich compositional works, which are far removed from the modern trends of the time .
