Gottfried Vollmer (racing driver)

Gottfried Vollmer (born April 12, 1906 in Essen ; † unknown) was a German automobile racing driver .

Career

His career began even before the Second World War . In 1939 he won the sports car race in the class up to 1100 cm³ in the Hamburg city park in a Neander RRG / 1100 cm³. It was only eight years after this victory that he was able to continue his sport. At first Gottfried ´Friedel` Vollmer competed with the pre-war Neander in Hockenheim in 1947 and finished second. In 1948 he won a race in Braunschweig with a VW special self-made / 1100 cm³.

In 1949 he won the Nürburgring and a race in Cologne with the improved VW custom-built . He took second place in ' Rund um Schotten ' and came fourth on the Grenzlandring . All of this brought him second place in the German championship ranking behind Petermax Müller / Eigenbau and in front of Eugen Krings and Richard Trenkel , both VW-Spezial.

In 1950 his car was no longer competitive. In addition to many failures, he only got a second place at the Solitude near Stuttgart . But he had found a replacement in good time. He bought in England a Formula 3 - Cooper with JAP -Motor. Vollmer transferred his new achievement himself. The car was part of the small-scale car formula that had existed in Germany since 1948 . From 1948 to 1953 ( GDR to 1959), German championships were held in this interesting class. The formula: 500 cm³, length: 180 cm, weight: 300 kg, fuel: methanol with high alcohol content, front or rear wheel drive. These specifications were a large field of experimentation for self-builders with modules from different manufacturers and self-made parts. Most of the cars were fitted with pre-war engines from NSU , Zündapp , DKW , BMW or from military remnants. And so none of the vehicles were like the other.

In 1950 Gottfried Vollmer won the races in Hockenheim and Schotten with his Cooper, ahead of the German champion of this class from 1948, 1949 and 1950, Walter Komossa . In the field hill climb he won ahead of Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Komossa. Walter Glöckler won the sports car class up to 1100 cm³ in his own VW build.

In 1952 Vollmer was the first to cross the finish line in the Glockenspitz race in Krefeld with the 'Atlas' Cooper. He gave the Cooper the nickname "Atlas" after a brand of cigars. Vollmer ran a tobacco shop in Essen. After the 1952 season, Gottfried Vollmer ended his racing career.
