Gottfried Wegleitner

Gottfried Wegleitner OFM (born July 17, 1972 in Vienna ; † July 2, 2018 there ) was an Austrian Franciscan priest.

Life

Wegleitner grew up in Frauenkirchen in Burgenland . After graduating from the high school of the Salesians Don Bosco in Unterwaltersdorf , he joined the order of the Franciscans . After the novitiate in Schwaz in Tyrol , Wegleitner studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Vienna, Canterbury and Rome . On February 13, 2005 he was ordained priest in Rome by Archbishop John Patrick Foley , President of the Pontifical Media Council . He was committed to helping refugees in Vienna.

In 2007 he was elected Guardian of the Vienna Franciscan Monastery ; In 2014 he gave up the office and for health reasons moved to Frastanz in Vorarlberg , where he worked as a pastor. In 2015 he was appointed general secretary of the Austrian Superior Conference, which represents 85 male religious orders; however, he was unable to take up the post for health reasons.

Gottfried Wegleitner was also a pastor and clergyman assistant for the Association of Catholic Publicists in Austria for many years . He himself was known nationwide as a commentator on church services on ORF and as a columnist for various daily and weekly newspapers.

Gottfried Wegleitner was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 2011 he was appointed Knight of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master John Patrick Cardinal Foley and invested in the Austrian Lieutenancy on October 1, 2011 in Vienna by Alois Kothgasser , Archbishop of Salzburg and Grand Prior of the Order in Austria.
