Gottfried Wilhelm Sacer (* 11. July 1635 in Naumburg (Saale) , † 8. September 1699 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German poet , satirist , poeticists and Protestant hymn writer .

Life

Coming from an old Thuringian family, Sacer, the son of a Naumburg mayor, was initially brought up by private tutors, later he attended the local city school in order to enroll at the Pforta state school in 1649 at the age of fourteen . In 1654 he moved to the University of Jena , where he studied law and literature . In 1657 he accepted a position as court master in Berlin. Even at this early point in time, he had first relationships with poets such as Paul Gerhardt , Georg Philipp Harsdörffer and Andreas Tscherning . Johann Rist accepted him under the name "Hierophilo" in the Order of the Elbe Swans .

In 1669 he accepted a position as a lawyer at the Wolfenbüttel court court. For this reason he was forced to resume and complete the interrupted legal studies. In September 1671 he received his doctorate in Kiel . His permanent residence was now Wolfenbüttel for the rest of his life, most recently as "Princely Chamber Consultant". He was buried in the churchyard of the local Marienkirche .

Saker's satirical writings on language and poetics are thoroughly amusing and worth reading, and his rhymes you, or I'll eat you , are often quoted.
