Gotthard Zölfl

Gotthard Zölfl (born October 22, 1950 in Stollberg / Erzgebirge ; † December 24, 2007 in Hohenstein-Ernstthal ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the East German Football Association . He played there for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt . Zölfl was a multiple junior and junior national player.

Career

Zölfl's football career started in the company sports community (BSG) activist in Neuwürschnitz in the Ore Mountains . In 1966 he was delegated to the football focus of the region, the FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. As its junior player, Zölfl was accepted into the squad of the GDR junior national team in 1967. He played his first international junior match on April 16, 1967 in a 1-1 draw against Poland. By 1969 he came to 25 international matches with the youth team with the high point of participation in the UEFA youth tournament in 1969. The GDR team came second after drawing lots after a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria. On the way there, the GDR juniors had beaten England 4-0, and Zölfl had scored three goals. Also in 1969, Zölfl played in three international matches with the GDR youth team.

At the age of 17 Zölfl played his first games in the league team of FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. He made his debut in the league on the 15th matchday of the 1967/68 season, March 2, 1968. In the encounter between FC Karl-Marx-Stadt - 1. FC Lok Leipzig (0-1), he was used as an inside striker. This was followed by another three league games by the end of the season, in which Zölfl only came on as a substitute. In the game year 1968/69 he had no GDR league missions, he continued to play in the junior league. However, he was on June 1, 1969 in the first half with the first team in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which FCK lost 4-0 to 1. FC Magdeburg. For the 1969/70 season, the FCK officially nominated him as a striker for the league team. He was actually used in the first six league games in attack, but only three times over the full 90 minutes. After a long break, Zölfl came again from the 23rd to the 26th matchday in the league team, although he only played through on the 25th matchday.

Five weeks late, the official GDR sports newspaper Deutsches Sportecho reported that Zölfl had been banned by FC Karl-Marx-Stadt from August 1, 1970 to July 31, 1971 for “gross discipline violations”. For the 1971/72 season Zölfl was listed as a new addition to the army sports community Vorwärts Leipzig , but he never played for the first team there. Even later, Zölfl was no longer used in higher-class football. As a recreational footballer, he played for some time with the fourth-class district class team Motor Lößnitz, after which he went back to activist Neuwürschnitz. He died of alcohol in 2007 at the age of 57.
