history
Frankenberg Castle
On the summit of the Frankenberg, a chapel dedicated to St. Godehard of Hildesheim was added to the castle standing there . Since then the mountain has been called "Gotthardsberg". The castle was destroyed in 1168 and a Cistercian nunnery was built on the same site in the 13th century . In the years 2010 to 2012, cellar vaults and remains of walls were uncovered.
Gotthard ruins
The monastery was burned down in the Peasants' War in 1525 . In 1628 its reconstruction began as a three-aisled pillar basilica. A lightning strike burned it down on June 8th, 1714 and has existed since then as today's ruin. In 1878 the tower of the church was raised and turned into a lookout point. To protect the ruin from the weather and decay, it was given a roof in 1956. In 1990 part of the summit was deforested.
