Gottlieb Philipp Christian Kaiser (born May 6, 1781 in Hof (Saale) ; † January 3, 1848 in Erlangen ) was a German Protestant theologian , clergyman and university professor .

Life

Kaiser was the son of Hofer's pastor Nikolaus Kaiser. He studied theology at the universities of Leipzig and Erlangen . He then worked as a teacher as well as a clergyman in court and subdeacon in Münchberg . During this time he began his writing activity. In 1814 he returned to Erlangen as a deacon . There he became pastor and in 1815 Dr. theol. PhD and shortly thereafter qualified as a professor . The first teaching position at the university as a private lecturer followed .

Kaiser became an associate professor in 1816 and a short time later in 1817 a full professor of theology at Erlangen University as well as a royal Bavarian consistorial councilor. In 1822 he gave up his activity as a clergyman in order to be able to concentrate fully on his scientific work. Friedrich Wilhelm Kantzenbach states in his biographical sketch of Kaiser’s scientific achievements: “His scientific reputation is not based on the numerous smaller exegesis studies, mostly written in Latin (...), which lack every major feature, but indirectly on his main work published in 1813 Biblical theology or Judaism and Christianism according to the grammatical-historical method of interpretation and according to a bold position in the critically comparative universal history of religions, and universal religion.
