Ekaterinoslav Governorate
The yekaterinoslav governorate ( Russian Екатеринославская губерния / Jekaterinoslawskaja Gubernija , Ukrainian Катеринославська губернія / Katerynoslawska hubernija ) was a province (Gubernija / губерния) of the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union . The capital of the governorate was the city of Yekaterinoslav, today's Dnipro in Ukraine .
geography
The governorate lay in the south and east of today's Ukraine. It bordered on the west by the province of Kherson , on the northwest by the Poltava Governorate , north to the Kharkov Governorate , in the south of the province Tauris and the east by the Oblast of the Don Army .

history
Since 1775 the territory of the governorate was a province of the governorate of New Russia of the Russian Empire, since 1783 there was an independent governorate, and on February 27, 1802 the governorate Yekaterinoslav was officially founded.
With the establishment of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1922, the Yekaterinoslav Governorate also became part of it. After several changes in the administrative structure, the governorate was dissolved on August 1, 1925 and the okrugs took its place : Yekaterinoslav, Zaporizhia, Kryvyi Rih , Melitopol and Pavlograd.

The Yekaterinoslav Governorate had an area of 63,395 km² until 1887 and, after the Ujesdy Taganrog and Rostov-on-Don were spun off, 56,357.37 km².
The population in 1856 was 1,039,500 and 2,113,674, including 80,979 German speakers, in the census of 1897.
