The ball game club Grün-Weiß Wesel-Flüren eV from 1949 is a sports club from Wesel on the Lower Rhine. The club, which is based in the Flüren district , comprises the four departments of football, athletics, table tennis and gymnastics. In the 1970s and 1980s, the athletics department was nationally successful.

history

In the years after the Second World War there was initially no sports club in the then still independent communities of Flüren and Diersfordt . On June 25, 1949, citizens of both communities founded a football club in the Waldschenke locality in Flüren under the name Ballspielverein Grün-Weiß Flüren-Diersfordt . On September 1, 1949, the newly founded club was registered with the West German Football Association . The site at Sandkamp near Diersfordt served as the first provisional sports field, and a permanent sports field was built in the vicinity of the Diersfordter restaurant Am Jäger . This venue was located in the middle of the Diersfordt Forest. In 1950, the then purely football club began taking part in official matches. In October 1965, the Waldstadion was inaugurated as a new venue on the outskirts of Flüren . In the run-up to the opening of the new sports facility, the previous football club was expanded to include athletics, table tennis and gymnastics on June 2, 1965.

The athletics department, which was created in 1965, achieved national success just a few years after it was founded. The decathlete Heinz-Ulrich Schulze was twice German youth champion and twice junior champion in his discipline before taking third place at the German athletics championships in 1971 . At the European Athletics Championships in 1971 , the Flürener club member was fourth. In preparation for the 1972 Summer Olympics , Schulze sustained an injury during the pole vault that ended his career in competitive sports. In 1976, Grün-Weiß Flüren organized a half marathon and a cross-country run for the first time , which have been held annually since then. The course record of the half marathon (1:06:30 hours) was set by a club member , Manfred Brucks . Between 1980 and 1982 there was also a full-distance marathon run. In addition to Heinz-Ulrich Schulze, the athletics department produced a number of other successful athletes in the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1980, the club was successful again at the German athletics championships when Christa Telaak , Eva-Maria Dahms and Gisela Henschel took third place in the women's team classification at the marathon. In 1981, Manfred Brucks, a member of the Flüren athletics department, won the first edition of the Rhine-Ruhr Marathon .

The table tennis department of Grün-Weiß Flüren made it to the top league several times, most recently in 2011. In 2015, the gymnastics department was the club's department with the largest number of members.
