Gracemere is a city in eastern Queensland in Australia . The place has 10814 inhabitants (2016).

geography

Gracemere is ten kilometers from downtown Rockhampton and the Fitzroy River and around 620 kilometers north of Brisbane . The Capricorn Highway (A4) runs through the town in a west-east direction, the Burnett Highway (A3) touches it in the east and the Bruce Highway (A1) reaches its northeastern tip. The Coral Sea is 40 kilometers away to the east.

history

In 1853 the settlers Charles and William Archer, originally from Scotland , came to the eastern regions of Queensland and founded a town on a lake in 1855, which they named Gracemere . The name is based on the first name Grace of the wife of her brother Thomas and the Scottish name for lake: mere . The livelihood of the settlers was initially sheep and cattle breeding.

Because of the fertile area, this industry developed rapidly and the population increased rapidly. Further impetus came from the development of coal mines in the area and the construction of the Stanwell Power Station in the 1980s. This is also reflected in the population development:
